BELLEVUE, WA – The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has reversed an earlier order which put a hold on a lower court ruling that blocked California’s new law prohibiting concealed carry in most public places, handing a significant victory to gun rights groups including the Second Amendment Foundation.

The law had been blocked by U.S. District Court Judge Cormac J. Carney, who declared the statute “repugnant to the Second Amendment, and openly defiant of the Supreme Court.” The case is known as May v. Bonta.

“This is a major win for California gun owners and the Second Amendment,” said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb. “It is a definite wake-up call to anti-gun Gov. Gavin Newsom and his Democrat colleagues in the California legislature who pushed through the ‘sensitive places’ law as a way of thumbing their nose at the Supreme Court, as well as the Constitution.”

Joining SAF in its case are Gun Owners of America, Gun Owners Foundation, Gun Owners of California, Liberal Gun Owners Association, the California Rifle & Pistol Association and eleven private citizens. They are represented by attorneys C.D. Michel, Sean A. Brady and Konstadinos T. Moros at Michel & Associates in Long Beach, and Donald Kilmer, Law Offices of Don Kilmer, Caldwell, Idaho.

“Judge Carney correctly sees California’s law as an affront to the Constitution,” said SAF Executive Director Adam Kraut. “We’re delighted the Ninth Circuit Court will allow his order, blocking the law to remain in effect. We certainly expect to prevail.”

This last couple of years as I get a little older, I have paid a bit more attention to recovery time while hunting, hiking and working out. The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) has announced its lineup of Master Instructor and Range Officer training courses for 2024! These courses allow learning opportunities on how to train others in marksmanship as well as to ensure safety and proper regulations at local competitive events. The training schedule has expanded in 2024 to reach even more individuals around the country – offering dates in the winter, spring, summer and fall months.

Those seeking certification in teaching marksmanship basics and match details as “Master Instructors” of CMP’s sanctioned Garand, Springfield and Modern/Vintage Military (GSMM) rifle or Rimfire Sporter rifle events should look to the GSMM Master Instructor Training Workshops. The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) is privileged to announce USA Shooting has selected the Judith Legerski CMP Competition Center in Anniston, Ala., as host site to Part 3 of the 2024 Air Gun Olympic Trials!

The match is set for Jan. 5-7, 2024, and will be the final step in the Olympic Selection series. Athletes will compete in two days of ISSF (International Shooting Sport Federation) 60-shot events. Spectators are welcome into the Judith Legerski CMP Competition Center through the duration of the Olympic Trials, free of charge.

The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) is excited to announce the launch of Combine 2 in its Sightline series of Esports games – Sandstorm!

In November, the CMP began its venture into Esports through Sightline, Combine 1, which had over 100,000 unique users and aimed to present versatile marksmanship training through gameplay that can later be translated to a live range. Combine 2 expands upon that notion by engaging users in breath control, crosswind and shot visualization – featuring fresh gameplay mechanics within a desert environment.

Finding a great quality leather boot that can handle the prairie, the snow and mud and still look good enough to walk into the lodge or club is not easy but Rocky had done a great job with the Waterproof Rocky Outback Hiker Boot. One of the features we liked about these boots was these Rocky boots are oil and slip resisting. We found these boots also do extremely well in snow and ice. I found the traction of these boots to be exceptional in just about any condition. We took them upland hunting and the lace-up design allows you to keep them tight for uneven terrain and looser for smooth surface hiking. The lugs on these boots is pretty flat so they don’t seem to collect a lot of mud and rocks. These boots come in sizes from 8 to 15 and a medium as well as a wide version so you can pick the size that best fits your feet and your needs.

Overall, I really liked these boots. I wore them for about a month on and off and with several hunts chasing pheasants and some photography hikes. Conditions for the vast majority of our time wearing these was late fall and into the winter and snowy weather. BELLEVUE, WA – Noting that California’s “sensitive places” law severely restricting lawful concealed carry is “sweeping, repugnant to the Second Amendment, and openly defiant of the Supreme Court,” a federal judge has issued a preliminary injunction against the law’s enforcement.

It is a major victory for the Second Amendment Foundation and its partners in a federal lawsuit filed in September. The case is known as May v. Bonta. Sharing the victory are Gun Owners of America, Gun Owners Foundation, Gun Owners of California, the California Rifle & Pistol Association and eleven private citizens. U.S. District Judge Cormac J. Carney at the Central District of California handed down his 43-page decision Wednesday. In his ruling, the judge noted, “The right to self-defense and to defend one’s family is fundamental and inherent to our very humanity irrespective of any formal codification…For many years, the right to bear arms, and so necessarily the right to self-defense, was relegated to second-class status.” That all changed when the U.S. Supreme Court handed down three landmark rulings over the course of 14 years, ending with the June 2022 Bruen decision.

But California lawmakers and Gov. Gavin Newsom essentially ignored the high court, and as Judge Carney noted, defied the rulings on Second Amendment rights. Senate Bill 2, designating virtually all private property open to the public as “sensitive places” was adopted.

“SB2 is not only an affront to the right to keep and bear arms,” said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb, “it’s an insult to the intelligence of every honest citizen in the Golden State. It amounts to a massive prohibition on legal carry throughout the state, which runs counter to what the U.S. Supreme Court said in its Bruen ruling last year. Thankfully, Judge Carney sent a message to Gov. Newsom and anti-gun-rights state lawmakers that they can’t get away with this.”
