Savage Arms IMPULSE Wins Guns & Ammo Rifle of the Year

Savage Arms is proud to announce that IMPULSE has been selected as the Rifle of the Year by Guns & Ammo Magazine. The American-made straight-pull rifle was chosen for the award by editors, contributors, and staff of the magazine.

“To win Rifle of the Year is humbling,” said Beth Shimanski, Director of Marketing at Savage Arms. “The competition for the 2021 award was fierce. In this crowded field, though, IMPULSE stands alone. The speed of IMPULSE’s straight-pull action has changed the way Americans think about hunting rifles. This design combines everything Savage has learned about accuracy and reliability with innovation that provides marksmen and women with new capabilities. The Guns & Ammo Rifle of the Year award is a welcome recognition of Savage’s leadership in this industry.”

“The Savage IMPULSE pushed Savage rifles to a new level in 2021 and proved their dedication to technology and safety,” Guns & Ammo editors noted. “Creating a unique, reliable rifle is never easy, but the IMPULSE combines the innovative features of other Savage rifles along with Hexlock bolt technology that provided a fast, safe, and accurate shot. This rifle was designed to attract hunters of all types through versatile features and load compatibilities. Each model delivers on their promise of speed and range.”

“During Guns & Ammo’s evaluation, we determined that Savage Arms succeeded in producing a rifle that yields exceptional precision and accuracy,” they added. “Dressed in OD Green and variations of camouflage, IMPULSE is an American-made gun that stands out amongst the competition.”

The Rifle of the Year award is a testament to IMPULSE’s success, range, and versatility and is a milestone for the company. Savage’s RENEGAUGE Guns & Ammo’s Shotgun of the Year in 2020, and IMPULSE’s award marks the first time a company has won Guns & Ammo annual awards in consecutive years in different categories.

Maine issues permits for Moose Hunt utilized by Skills4Life Heroes

Veterans participate in Maine Moose hunt

four Skills4Life heroes were invited to hunt moose in Maine. Maine issued nearly 20 tag permits to out-of-state veterans. Military Warriors Support Foundation Skills4Life program was able to procure four tags for our Heroes. The goal of this hunt was to conserve the population and cull moose, which are contributing to the loss of broccoli crops.

The Maine Disabled Veterans Controlled Moose Hunt provides tags, guides and equipment for the hunters. Each guide is specially trained for conservation, and all Disabled Veterans Controlled Moose Hunts were held on properties being farmed by Smith Farms.

Our Skills4Life veterans were able to tag one bull and three bulls. The largest bull measured 50 ¾”! Some of the guides and local game wardens appeared on the tv show Northwood’s Law which made for some exciting evening stories. Each Hero was sent home with up to 100 lbs. of meat in their luggage to share with their friends and families. MWSF is grateful to Maine and all those involved for making this a highly successful hunt for our veterans.

If you or someone you know would like to apply, please visit our website at: https://militarywarriors.org

Rigby to sell first-editions of new biography celebrating Jim Corbett: Hero of Kumaon

Hero of Kumaon is a brand new biography by author Duff Hart-Davis, that takes readers on a journey through the fascinating life and adventures of one of Rigby’s most famous customers – legendary man-eating tiger hunter and conservationist, Jim Corbett.

Signed by the author and in its first edition, the book threads together the life of this very private, unassuming Indian railway employee. Often using Jim’s own thrilling narrative, Duff sets out the highlights of Jim’s adventures in sequence and in context, thus throwing light on an extraordinary character. The book makes mention of Rigby’s acquirement of Jim Corbett’s famous .275 and the subsequent tour of Kumaon, managing director Marc Newton took the rifle on.

In researching this book, biographer and journalist Hart-Davis travelled to Uttarakhand on several occasions, visiting the Corbett Tiger Reserve and many of the places Jim Corbett, his boyhood hero, would have known.

Renowned author Duff Hart-Davis commented: “In Hero of Kumaon, I have done my best to describe Jim’s life, the devotion which he inspired among hill folk, and his influence on the development of conservation in India. To bring the narrative alive, I have included the best of his stories, mostly in his own words. It seems a miracle that Rigby have managed to preserve the .275 presented to him in 1907 for killing the Champawat man-eater. But here it is – a fascinating memento of an extraordinary man.”

Rigby’s managing director Marc Newton commented: “We are very excited to be selling this wonderful biography documenting Jim Corbett’s fascinating life. Rigby’s historical connection with this incredible man is something we have always treasured and one that we will continue to celebrate.”

DNR Working With Multiple Agencies To RemoveInvasive Carp From Mississippi River Oct. 25-29

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) alongside neighboring state and federal agencies are conducting an intensive invasive carp removal effort in Pool 8 of the Mississippi River near La Crosse Oct. 25-29.

The Wisconsin DNR is working with the Minnesota DNR, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) using the innovative Modified Unified Method (MUM). This is the second time MUM has been used in Wisconsin or Minnesota waters. Thirty-four silver carp were captured in Pool 8 (La Crosse and Vernon Co.) during the first interagency carp removal operation in April.

There will be no impacts to commercial or recreational boat traffic on the main channel of the Mississippi River.

Developed by the USGS, the MUM method uses block nets to create compartments or “cells.” The USGS then uses electrofishing boats and boats outfitted with underwater speakers to herd carp from each cell. When a cell is cleared, another net is used to close the cell and prevent the fish from returning.

This process is repeated one cell at a time, gradually reducing the area available to the carp and concentrating the fish into a harvest removal area. A large commercial seine net will then be used to draw out the congregated fish. Native fish do not seem to respond in the same way as the invasive carp, preferring to hide, rather than run, from the sound stimulus.

Follow a few safety rules while enjoying upland bird opener

LINCOLN, Neb. – Excitement is building for Nebraska upland bird hunters as the Oct. 30 opener of the pheasant and northern bobwhite season approaches.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission reminds hunters of the following safety tips when pursuing upland game:

Always keep the shotgun’s muzzle pointed in a safe direction.Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire.Properly identify your target and what lies beyond it before pulling the trigger.Know where everyone in your hunting group is located at all times and be in direct communication. Keep shots in your safe zone of fire, approximately 45 degrees in in front of you, and do not swing on game in the direction of your partners.Wear hunter orange. Blaze orange on your head, chest and back will make you more visible to those around you and has been responsible for an 80% drop in hunting incidents since the 1970s.Be sure to completely unload your firearm when crossing obstacles such as barbed-wire fences, ditches and creeks.

Hunting continues to be a safe family-oriented activity in Nebraska, with the number of incidents dropping to an all-time low since recordkeeping began in the 1970s. By following a few simple safety tips, hunters and their families can enjoy their time spent afield.

Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation President and CEO Frank Peterson Announces Retirement

Under Peterson’s Nearly 15 years of leadership, boating and fishing industries reached high-water marks through extensive recruitment, retention and reactivation efforts

The Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation (RBFF) President and CEO Frank Peterson announced he will step down as President and CEO on December 31, 2021, and will retire on February 28, 2022. Peterson’s retirement comes as RBFF continues its mission to increase participation in recreational boating and fishing, thereby helping to conserve and restore aquatic natural resources throughout the U.S.

Since joining RBFF as President and CEO in 2007, Peterson has been instrumental in leading the fishing and boating industries toward record engagement levels through innovative recruitment campaigns along with retention and reactivation efforts at the national- and state levels

In 2020, an impressive 55 million Americans fished at least once, the highest number recorded since participation tracking began in 2007. Likewise, the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA)—which represents the North American recreational boat, engine and marine accessory manufacturers—reported more than 310,000 new powerboats were sold in 2020, meeting levels the recreational boating industry had not achieved since before the Great Recession in 2008. Both industries have continued to report strong engagement levels throughout 2021 despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and global supply chain obstacles.

“Outdoor activities like fishing and boating enhance the quality of life for tens of millions of Americans like few things can, and that’s why RBFF is so deeply committed to increasing participation in the activities which help conserve our most beloved waterways for future generations to enjoy,” Peterson said. “Working alongside the RBFF team to help guide the record growth of fishing and boating the past 15 years has been the highlight of my career, both as a professional and outdoorsman.”

Sportfishing Industry Lends Support for Aquatic Invasive Species Control Legislation

New bill would expand authorities for federal agencies to slow the spread of aquatic invasive species

Yesterday, Reps. John Garamendi (D-Calif.) and Mark Amodei (R-Nev.) introduced H.R. 5692, the “Stop the Spread of Invasive Mussels Act,” which would help address the growing spread of aquatic invasive species that negatively impact fisheries resources and recreational fishing opportunities.

The American Sportfishing Association (ASA) supports the introduction of the bipartisan bill, commending the inclusion of provisions ensuring best management practices for inspection stations across federal agencies.

The bill would ensure that federal land management agencies, such as the Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service, have the legal authority to conduct boat inspections and decontaminations on federal land. In addition, it would establish a new U.S. Bureau of Reclamation grant program for inspection stations at federally managed reservoirs.

Invasive mussels, such as zebra and quagga mussels, threaten freshwater ecosystems and the fish that inhabit them, competing with native species for resources and contributing to harmful algal blooms. Invasive mussels further strain water and reservoir infrastructure, clogging pipelines, impairing canals and constraining hydropower production.

YETI Camino Carryall Review

A bag is a bag is a bag until you get your hands on one of the YETI Camino Carryall bags. The Carryall features the same waterproof, puncture-resistant shell that we know from YETI. This keeps the moisture out no matter where you place the bag and keeps the contents of the bag dry and clean. Alternatively, you can store your muddy and wet gear inside the bag to prevent your car from getting dirty. There is no zipper; it’s simply a tough, sturdy open bag for easy use. Inside, you will find movable (and removable) dividers to organize the contents as needed. Our Camino has held up to everything we have tossed into it, including chili. The chili spilled out of its container and into the bag, which was a loss. But the bag simply needed to be washed out with a garden hose. Most importantly, the chili did not leak all over the backseat of my truck due to the waterproof capabilities of the Carryall.

The YETI Camino Carryall is watertight, so much so that it will hold water. This is great for carrying water from the creek or lake to the campsite so you can make sure you are dousing your fire before leaving. The Camino comes with big grab handles and crossbars for holding on to. If you fill this with water, it will be quite heavy so use your back or, better yet, two people. Fair warning.

The YETI Camino Carryall is basically a giant bucket that you can toss just about everything into and load up and load out on your adventures. We keep the Carryall in the trunk of the SUV so we always know it is there. We have brought the Carryall right into the farmers’ market and filled it up with local produce. When we travel with food, all of the food goes into the Camino so in case something spills (like the chili did) we don’t have to stress out.

The dividers are nice to separate gear, the two zippered pockets can hold items such as a phone and keep it dry. The bag is easy to clean with a sponge and a little dishwashing detergent.

The YETI Camino Carryall is everything I never really knew that I needed in my life. On road trips it gets filled with snacks and food for the trip and as we burn through the food, it starts hauling finds we come across on our trips. Over the course of the last couple of years this bag has been hard to beat, and it still looks just as good as new. Even after the venison chili incident.

Combs will describe some of his most productive tactics and critical pieces of equipment for chasing fall bass with crankbaits in this edition of Shimano School. “Color, action, deflection – these are just a few of the issues that bass anglers need to consider when fishing with crankbaits – especially in the fall,” reflects Combs. “Successful cranking also means using the right tackle, from rod to reel and line. Toray Launching Toraysee™ Anti-Fog Cloth for Eyeglasses

Toray Industries, Inc., announced today that it will introduce the Toraysee Anti-Fog Cloth for Eyeglasses in mid-October, exclusively in Japan. This 15cm x 18 cm navy-colored item will retail for ¥880 (¥968, including consumption tax. It will be available from eyewear retailers, as well as from some Tokyu Hands stores, and through online and Toray shops around Japan.

Many people have found when wearing masks during the COVID-19 pandemic that eyewear fogs up from their breath. Even in the absence of masks, temperature differences heading into winter often lead to foggy lenses.

The development concept was to clean eyeglass lenses and prevent fogging with just one wipe of the cloth.

This keeps glasses fog-free for 12 hours. You can reuse the cloth up to 300 times and store it in a zipper bag to maintain performance for 12 months (results may vary according to usage environments). You can thereafter use the cloth as a regular cleaning item.

Toray debuted the Toraysee brand in 1987 to offer advanced cleaning performance for eyewear. The cloth’s ultra-fine fibers are 2 to 5 microns in diameter, for a cross-section that is about 1/1600th of a human hair. The fibers trap dirt in crevices that are invisible to the naked eye. The cloth can wipe away sebum and other grime that ordinary cloths cannot remove without damaging lenses.

American Sportfishing Association Partners with Wildlife Forever to Fight Spread of Aquatic Invasive Species

The “Clean Drain Dry” initiative educates anglers and boaters on how to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species

The American Sportfishing Association (ASA) and Wildlife Forever have entered into a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to address the spread of aquatic invasive species. Working through Wildlife Forever’s nationwide “Clean Drain Dry” initiative, the two organizations will partner to coordinate outreach and education efforts with leaders in the recreational fishing industry to help stop invasive species which are having a devastating impact on our nation’s freshwater species.

“Since 1933, ASA has been a leader in fisheries conservation. Working with the national Clean Drain Dry Initiative reaffirms our commitment to both the resource and our members by integrating programs that educate our customers. Together, we’re safeguarding our fisheries for future generations,” said Glenn Hughes, president of American Sportfishing Association.

Since 2006, Wildlife Forever’s Clean Drain Dry Initiative has worked to educate anglers and boaters on best practices to halt the spread of invasive species. Beyond its communications campaigns, the Clean Drain Dry Initiative is installing decontamination stations at dozens of boat launches annually.

“I’m proud that ASA joined the movement by taking an active role in invasive species prevention. Our partnership will leverage marketing and communication tools that empower best conservation practices to educate anglers, protecting the sport and the resource,” said Pat Conzemius, president and CEO of Wildlife Forever.
