Which Type of Gun Powder is Best for my Rifle?

Gun Powder

Many gun powders are being sold in the market. Although none of the gun powders are bad, some types of powders are more efficient and versatile than others. Some of the great powders that can cover many needs of reloaders include:

Hodgdon CFE BLK

This is a spherical reloading powder that burns very fast and is new in the market. The CFE BLK is a good powder option for reloaders of the .300 AAC Blackout because they can use it at all bullet weights. Some of these bullet weights include the subsonic 200-grain plus bullets and light 110-grain bullets.

The CFE BLK is dense. Therefore, it can potentially fit a lot into a small case. Therefore, if there is an issue of case capacity, this spherical powder can deliver more velocity numbers because it can pack more in the case.

Hodgdon Varget

This powder is medium-burning and extruded. It is also among the most popular rifle powders ever made. It works best in cartridges like the .223 Remington. People also use the Hodgdon Varget in over-bore cartridges like the 7mm-08, 30-06, and the 6.5 Creedmoor.

The Hodgdon Varget is a better choice than its competitors because of its extreme temperature stability. Temperature stability refers to the Hodgdon Varget’s ability to offer almost the same muzzle velocity in every ambient temperature.

Additionally, the Hodgdon Varget is almost temperature stable, which means a single correct load can be used year-round for long-range shooting. Therefore, it is more suitable for competitive shooters since competitions are held year-round.

Ramshot TAC

This is a spherical and medium-burning powder. It is usually used for loading the .223 Remington cartridges. It also works well for loading the .308 Winchester.

The Ramshot TAC is popular with .223 Remington reloaders because it is very efficient with 55-grain bullets.

Hodgdon H4350

This powder is a medium-slow burning and extruded powder. It is an iconic powder and is a temperature-stable extruded powder. It is commonly used in the 30-06 and the 6.5 mm short-action cartridges. These cartridges have become quite popular because, not only are they low-recoil, but they also have a lot of power for pig and deer hunting.

The Hodgdon H4350 can be out of stock for years so if you want to use it for a long period of time, it is advisable to buy a huge stock.

Reloader 22

It is an extruded magnum rifle powder that is sold by Alliant. The reloader 22 is not temperature stable. However, when it comes to velocity, it produces 100 fps more than the other powders. Furthermore, it is popularly known for being accurate.

IMR 4350

The IMR 4350 is an extruded powder. It is a medium-slow burning rifle powder that is currently being sold by Hodgdon. It is more accurate with the heavier 180 and 165-grain bullets. In addition, it delivers better velocity in all bullet weights.

Conclusion

Some of the gun powders that are good options for rifles include the reloader 22, the Hodgdon H4350, the IMR 4350, the Hodgdon Varget, Ramshot TAC, and the Hodgdon CFE BLK.
