October 3: First Big Buck Morning!

John A. and I hunted from our mutual ground blind stand we call the ‘Tin Barn.’  Last night I set my alarm wrong and got up, got ready, got out to the blind, a full 1 1/2 hours early. John arrived at the right time.

Over the weekend we saw lots of does and on Sunday had 7 bucks, all young ones.

Before daylight this morning several Doe size shadows moved into the immediate area And Scattered Around in the shadowy darkness. Although Unseen, A nice Buck was also watching.

Daylight came eventually and we saw several Does come through the area. Before long we noticed that our surprise guest was looking around the place only 30 yards from us.

Yikes, the battery in my to low to take a picture. So I used my iPhone, the pictures of which looked ok on the iphone screen, but were a little blurry.

How to Make Your Hunting Cabin Winter-Ready

Depending on how extreme winter gets where you have your hunting cabin, it’s important to prepare it for all seasons and every condition. Maintaining your hunting cabin will add to the longevity of the cabin and you and your friends could use it for many years. If not maintained properly, cabins can grow mold, bacteria, fungi, and germs during winter. This can affect every part of the cabin, from walls and interior to wood.

It’s essential to make your hunting cabin winter-ready before the extreme cold arrives. So, while it’s still nice outside, here are some tips on how to insulate and heat your cabin and make it winter-ready.

Insulate Your Hunting Cabin

Insulation is one of the most important steps in making your cabin ready for the winter months. The hunting cabin should have proper insulation to keep you warm inside. Before winter and cold arrive, make sure to check if there are any holes or leaks in the walls, windows, or doors. If you find any, patch the holes and insulate with the right materials.

There are many varieties of insulation materials you can use to insulate the building, like spray insulation. Look online and you can find insulation for sale to save some money. The insulation type depends on the size of your cabin, the material you want to use, and your budget. Insulation will stop condensation and ice dams. In addition, it’s easy to install, doesn’t promote mold, prevents heat transfer, and provides a comfortable stay for everyone.

Also, don’t forget to check your pipes. Pipes can easily freeze in the winter and flood the cabin by bursting out. To avoid this potential problem, make sure to insulate the plumbing pipes, as well. Use heat tape, pipe sleeves, or pipe wrap to keep the pipes functioning through the cold months.

Camping World’s Guide to RVing Mesa Verde National Park

Located in Colorado to the south of the La Plata Mountains, Mesa Verde National Park protects the cultural heritage of the Ancestral Pueblo people and is a World Heritage Site with roughly 4,700 archaeological sites and about 600 cliff dwellings.

If you want to step back in time and see how the Ancestral Puebloan people lived, RVing Mesa Verde National Park will leave you in awe as you walk around some of the most well-preserved archaeological sites in the United States.

Why Visit Mesa Verde National Park in an RV?

Mesa Verde is ideal for visiting in an RV since it is much less crowded than other national parks and is the perfect place to stop to rest and recharge for a few days while you are RVing around the American southwest.

Spend a few days hooked up at Morefield Campground located inside the park, and drive less than 40 minutes away to explore the mountain town of Durango. Make sure to make a reservation ahead of time since the campground only includes 15 full hookup RV sites.

Driving around the park takes around two hours and is accessible by all motor homes with parking options at most overlooks. If you have a trailer or car hitched on the back of your RV, make sure to unhook just past the main entrance gate due to a few tight turns throughout the park and trailer restrictions.

Opening Day Wild Boar

The beast is dead! Long live the mighty beast!

No deer today, but I was able to knock this big wild boar hog down.

My first arrow looked like a perfect quartering away shot. But I could still see the arrow in him as he ran away. I heard a crash and figured he was done. Boy, was I wrong…

I knocked another arrow and walked over to the area I last saw him, as I can around the corner, I could hear chomping. He was staring right at me only 15 yards away, chomping his cutters at me, pissed off as he could be.

I put another arrow in him, but it didn’t even phase him. The next thing I knew, he was charging right at me 100mph. So, I pulled my 9mm, and gave him all I had. Luckily, my 5th shot hit him right between the eyes and he dropped at my feet.

10 Essentials For Your Bowhunting Gear

Whether you’re narrowing the gap between food and your table, connecting more deeply to nature through conservation, or extending your hunting seasons with archery gear, you’ll never run short of great reasons to try bowhunting.

Gearing up to bowhunt is exciting, and it’s much simpler than most people realize. To help you better understand what you need for your first bowhunt, let’s review 10 basic bowhunting tools.

1. Compound Bow

Compound bows are great for beginning bowhunters and are the most popular style of bow among bowhunters today. Photo Credit: John Hafner Photo

Obviously, a bow of some sort is your most basic need. You have three bow types to choose from, starting with the compound bow. These bows are nearly standard issue for bowhunting today. They’re easier to shoot than traditional recurves or longbows, but require more practice than crossbows to become proficient. Modern compound bows are efficient and don’t require extraordinary strength to draw and shoot.

When selecting a bow, it’s best to seek help from an expert at an archery shop. Hunting bows are not “one size fits all.” Make sure you choose a bow that matches your fit and bowhunting needs. You must become as accurate as possible to enjoy shooting and be lethal in the woods.

2. Traditional Bow

Traditional recurves or longbows are bowhunting’s simplest weapons. These bows have been used thousands of years, and are more effective today than when our ancestors carried them for hunting and self-protection. Shooting and harvesting game animals with these basic bows is also challenging and rewarding.

Federal Ammunition Shooter Derrick Mein Takes Gold at ISSF and Qualifies for Olympic Games

Federal Ammunition sponsored shooter Derrick Mein took home the trap shooting gold at the 2022 International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championship being held in Osijek, Croatia. Mein’s performance was historic as he became the first U.S. male shooter to win a world title in trap since 1966.  With the win, Mein has now qualified the U.S.A. for a quota spot in the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, France.

“Federal shooters continue to make history on the world stage and it’s exciting to be part of their journey,” said Jason Nash, Federal’s Vice President of Marketing. “A big congratulations to Derrick for the win at ISSF. We at Federal can’t wait to see him earn another Olympic opportunity through the coming qualification process.”

During the 2022 ISSF, World Championships Mein broke 122 of 125 targets in qualification. Mein qualified for the medal match after winning a shoot-off against Rashi Al-Athba of Qatar securing Mein’s Olympic qualification. In the medal event, Mein out-shot Nathan Hales of Great Britain hitting 33 of 34 targets.

The win at ISSF continues the successful summer of shooting events for Mein. Capturing a bronze medal at the ISSF World Cup in Peru, Mein’s shooting streak continued by earning the No. 1 ranking after the ISSF World Cup in Azerbaijan.

“For me this win is a great accomplishment and for team USA, it gives us a spot to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Hopefully it will lead to more success from our team going forward,” said Derrick Mein. “The biggest key to my success has been quality training and confidence I have when shooting Federal Premium Ammunition. Having that confidence in my ammo lets me focus on doing what it takes to break targets.”

Field Evaluation: ThermaCELL Insect Repellent

In this field evaluation, we’ll review a popular product from The Schawbel Corporation called the ThermaCELL. If you hate flies and mosquitoes as much as I do, you’ll want to take time to read on.

ThermaCELL uses patented technology to disperse a small amount of repellent into the air over a long period of time. ThermaCELL is powered by a butane cartridge which provides the cordless, portable heat necessary to operate the device (batteries are not needed). It directs the heat to a metal grill. A blue pad saturated with Allethrin, a copy of a naturally occurring insecticide found in chrysanthemum flowers, is placed on top of the metal grill. The heat generated by the butane cartridge vaporizes the repellent allowing it to rise into the air, creating a 15 x 15 ft (225 sq ft) “Mosquito-Free-Zone” in minutes. The repellent is very unpleasant to mosquitoes, but when used outdoors, will not harm humans or pets.

ThermaCELL provides a 15′ x 15′ “bug-free zone”.

Inflation Is Here: Should You Sell Your RV?

Facebook Twitter PinterestLinkedIn

Market conditions will impact RV sales, but the best time to sell your RV is when you’re done using your RV, not when the market is perfect. Waiting will only cost you money.

Sponsored by National Vehicle

You may be asking yourself, “How have the recent changes in US economics impacted the RV industry?” With inflation and gas prices climbing to unprecedented levels, and interest rates repeatedly being raised by the Fed, should you wait on buying or selling an RV?

The simple answer to the question, “Should I sell my RV now?” is yes. Even with all the recent upheaval in the US economy, there is still a huge interest in RVing, and most people think inflation and rising gas prices are a short-term phenomenon.

Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers

Celebrates Achievement During National Conference

The Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers (AGLOW) welcomed more than 125 media, corporate, conservation, and tourism members to its annual conference September 18 to 22 in Branson, Missouri.

The conference celebrated another year of achievement and continued growth for one of the nation’s oldest and most established outdoors communications organizations. Together, these groups offer a robust storytelling experience for the hunting, fishing and boating enthusiasts.

Delta Waterfowl’s John Devney Reappointed to Hunting and Wildlife Conservation Council

NORTH DAKOTA — U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland has announced the reappointment of John Devney, chief policy officer of Delta Waterfowl, to the Hunting and Wildlife Conservation Council.  Spanning multiple presidential administrations, the Council advises the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Agriculture on critical policies affecting public lands, wildlife and habitat conservation.

“This appointment provides Delta the opportunity to give duck hunters a seat at the table with the leadership of the Department of the Interior and the Department of Agriculture,” Devney said. “Both agencies have a disproportionate impact on ducks, duck habitat and duck hunters.”

Managed by the USFWS, the Hunting and Wildlife Conservation Council is an advisory committee of subject matter experts working to benefit wildlife and habitat conservation; expand fair-chase hunting, recreational shooting sports, and wildlife-associated recreation opportunities; and policies that benefit national and local economies.

“This group of sportsmen and women will provide USDA and DOI vital insight in how we can strengthen wildlife conservation, expand recreational access, and promote rural economic development,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. “They are a critical partner in preserving America’s wildlife and hunting heritage and advancing our work to protect our nation’s precious lands and waters.”

Devney was first appointed to the Council in 2018, serving as chair of the hunting committee.

Delta Waterfowl and Manitoba Government Seek Your Input on Proposed Hunter Access Changes

Manitoba Natural Resources and Northern Development is considering changes that would impact all waterfowl hunter access in the province. An integral part of the consideration is public comment from all interested parties who have previously hunted, currently hunt, or may plan to hunt waterfowl in Manitoba in the future.

The proposed changes would address:

Limiting the number of waterfowl outfitters operating in Manitoba and restructuring their areas of operation.Enactment and enforcement of stricter laws regarding illegal operation of foreign non-resident outfitters and guides in the province.Options for capping the number of foreign non-resident waterfowl hunters permitted to hunt in Manitoba in any given year.Options for limiting the number of days that foreign non-resident waterfowl hunters would be allowed to hunt in Manitoba in a season.

The vast majority of foreign non-resident waterfowl hunters in Manitoba are Americans, however Delta has supporters resident to all Canadian provinces and the United States, so the input from everyone with an interest in hunting in Manitoba is important to the process.

Delta has been in regular contact with the provincial authorities seeking to shape this proposed legislation to help all Manitoba waterfowl hunters with access issues and minimize additional restrictions on US hunters who wish to hunt waterfowl in  the province.

You can review the Manitoba Natural Resources and Northern Development‘s proposed changes in detail and make your views heard at  https://reg.gov.mb.ca/detail/7450729. You’ll need to scroll down on the landing page to the “Regulatory Accountability Impact Analysis” section and click on the “Policy Objectives” bar. There you can read the proposed changes, objectives and justifications. Then you can use the “Make a Comment” button in the upper right corner of the landing page to create an account and express your opinions.
