Gamakatsu® Steps Into the Knife Market with their New Every Day Carry Knives

Gamakatsu®, the world’s leading manufacturer and innovator of fishing hooks and terminal tackle, introduces its new series of Everyday Carry (EDC) Knives. Carrying a pocket knife comes in handy in multiple situations, emergencies, and general cutting chores from day to day for the carrier.

Gamakatsu has developed four different-sized folding knives to suit EDC needs for work and play. All four knives are ready to tackle any task.

When designing these knives, Gamakatsu went with the best. The Gamakatsu EDC blades offer durable high-end D2 steel. These knives have a frame lock style handle, a locking mechanism used in one-handed knives. The frame lock closure system makes it possible to open and close the knife with one hand. These knives also feature an assisted opening action/flipper mechanism to make opening easier.

The significant differences between the knives are the sizes, handle materials and blade style. The GMKT1 features a 3.25-inch Drop Point blade with a plain edge, Stonewash finish, and a Blackwash stainless steel handle. The most carry-friendly Gamakatsu knife is the GMKT2 EDC knife featuring a 2.75-inch Drop Point blade, with a two-toned satin finish and a plain edge. The handle material is stainless steel with an attractive Bluewash finish.

The two larger bladed EDC knives have an upgraded handle. GMKT3, the largest EDC knife, has a 3.625-inch Stonewash finish blade that is partially serrated. It features a G10 front handle scale and Stonewash steel back handle. The GMKT4 is a 3.5-inch Tanto style, with Black Oxide and a plain edge. It features a G10/Carbon Fiber Overlay and Black Oxide steel handle.

The Game Changing New Cooler from YETI

YETI has built a reputation on creating best-in-class coolers and lifestyle products and this week’s announcement is no exception. The WHEELED ROADIE 48 and the WHEELED ROADIE 60 are hitting the market in August just in time for hunting season and a very busy Fall. The Wheeled Roadie is built for travel. Whether in the back of the SUV or the back of the truck, these coolers are easy to wheel right into your camp site or on to your boat.

YETI understands innovation. They are continually working on new colors and new products, even products that you haven’t even thought about yet. We took our first tour through a YETI store in Charleston, SC, last month and it was impressive to see the wide selection of products from YETI cups to all of the great colorways in the cooler line up.

The Roadie launch includes two models which will be available in late August: the Roadie 48 ($450) and the larger Roadie 60 ($500). Both of these coolers are almost 20 inches tall and about 20 inches deep. The Roadie 48 is almost 20 inches wide and the big Roadie 60 is almost 24 inches wide. They hold about 40 and 50 cans respectively with an ideal YETI 2-to-1 ice-to-can ratio. The height on these allow them to be tall enough for bottles of wine and 2 liter bottles. We often fill old 2 liters bottles with water, freeze them and throw them into the YETI along with ice cubes. We will do this when we know we have the extra space and this lets us have cold water to drink after several days.

Fully loaded the large YETI Roadie 60 is a solid cooler. The integrated wheels make this cooler easy to move around with the strong telescoping handle. Loading it onto the boat or into the back of your SUV or truck, don’t hesitate to ask your buddies for a hand; fully loaded it’s heavy. Done correctly, the YETI Roadie is as solid as any cooler on the market. Ice and cold drinks will last 4 to 7 days depending upon use. Honestly, you really cannot ask for more than that from a cooler.

Buy it once and take care of it and these will outlast any cooler you have had in the past. The handle and the ability to maneuver these coolers down the dock, around the campsite or down the trail in hunting camp is truly a game changer.

Shimano World Pop 69F FLASH BOOST Delivers Innovation to Topwater Fishing

BOOST CONCEPT Visual Effects Elicit Vicious Surface Strikes

Nothing tops the sight of a largemouth bass closing in on a popper or the unmistakable sound of snook slurping baits deep beneath the tangle of overhanging mangroves. Shimano’s legendary BOOST CONCEPT technology prevails in every scenario with the introduction of the World Pop 69F FLASH BOOST, a multi-purpose topwater lure that triggers explosive strikes amid a variety of conditions.

Fish rely on sight and sound to locate and attack their prey, and Shimano’s World Pop 69F FLASH BOOST provides maximum appeal to both senses. Outfitted with a cupped face to create an incredible surface commotion that beckons fish from a distance, World Pop FB makes a deep gurgling sound and dramatic bubble trail with each hard snap of the rod tip.

Poppers are traditionally most effective in low light, but the World Pop 69F FLASH BOOST excels in every condition to produce an all-day topwater bite. Offering enhanced visual effects, this is the first popper to incorporate Shimano’s proprietary system FLASH BOOST technology: a paradigm-shifting visual enhancement that also fortifies Shimano’s SP-Orca, World Minnow, World Diver and World Crank lure families. FLASH BOOST suspends a highly reflective foil on micro springs within the lure’s body to create a continuous flash that mimics a wounded baitfish, even as the popper sits motionless on the surface. “FLASH BOOST is extremely effective at calling fish in under a wide range of water conditions,” notes Shimano Pro and Bassmaster Elite Series angler Josh Douglas. “In cold, super-clear water where bass can see a long way, even a motionless lure continues to shimmer and sparkle thanks to FLASH BOOST.”

Further enhancing the natural mimicry and giving the lure a sense of life, Shimano’s exclusive SCALE BOOST technology incorporates a lifelike composite-pitch hologram to provide World Pop with a natural scale pattern that emits intense and complex reflections through the water column. By combining SCALE BOOST with FLASH BOOST, the World Pop 69F maintains its visual appeal even in the absence of angler-imparted motion.

SPRO® Pocket Tail Minnow Available in Five New Colors By Popular Demand

Last year SPRO® introduced the 3.75 inch Pocket Tail Minnow swimbait to great acclaim, and it has proven to be a resounding success with freshwater and saltwater anglers alike. SPRO is adding five new color patterns to the already-extensive lineup to further enhance its universal appeal.

The five new colors include:

Whether used it on its own or as a trailer for a bucktail, swim jig, or vibrating jig, the Pocket Tail Minnow is a do-it-all, small-but-powerful stick of dynamite. The hard-thumping tail contains a small pocket that provides a different sound profile than any other lure – so pressured fish will still be susceptible to this presentation. Fisher Space Pens’ Bullet – The EDC Crowd Pleaser

Some people feel a modern smartphone has replaced a pen, notepad, flashlight, and camera. For some, it has. Even in this age of modern technology, being able to write something down can still be one of the most important and meaningful things you do. Putting pen to paper creates a much stronger memory association with our thoughts. Ever tried to recite the phone numbers of the four people you speak to the most on the phone? It’s more complicated than you think. It’s the old-fashioned art of brushing a pen across a page that Fisher Space Pen® has been at the forefront of for decades. The original Bullet has been the shining star of generations and still stands today as a classic piece of American culture.

Few pens can go and write where Fisher Space Pen can. Noted as the first ballpoint Fisher Pen, the original Bullet Space Pen was conceived in 1948. Paul Fisher machined the pen design shaped from solid aluminum. The Bullet Pen is regarded as an outstanding example of industrial art. The classic design of the Fisher Bullet Pen has been held in the permanent collection of the New York Museum of Modern Art. Utilizing the pressurized PR4 ink refill cartridge synonymous with Fisher products, meaning they will write upside down, at any angle, underwater, through grease, at extreme temperatures (-30 to +250 degrees F), on almost any surface. Of course, even the gravity-free vacuum of space won’t stop these pens from writing.

Being a part of American pop-culture is nothing new for this compact bullet space pen. In fact, the popularity of this particular space pen created such an impression on the writers on the hit tv series Seinfeld that they created an entire episode entitled ‘The Pen’ to feature the story and uniqueness behind this iconic ballpoint pen.

EDC stands for Everyday Carry. Your EDC is the collection of items you carry in your pockets or your bag daily that you tap your pockets for before you head out the door. EDC are things you feel naked and unorganized without, consisting of a pocket knife, hanky, flashlight, key fob, cell phone, wallet, sunglasses and a pen.

Chrome Bullet Pens are the perfect size for EDC in a wallet, pocket, purse, travel neck pouch, organizer or backpack. The Chrome Bullet Pen is compact, and the cap posts on the end of the barrel to make for a comfortable writing experience. In an open position, it’s a full-sized, evenly balanced writing tool. Whether signing a receipt, jotting down a phone number, directions, taking general notes or puncturing packaging tape, there is no shortage of uses for an EDC pen. Regarding self-defense, having an all-metal construction is an advantage. The average writing pen is not known for its durability; the Bullet Space Pen is.

Ned Knows Saltwater, Too!

Z-Man® Salty Ned ShrimpZ™ brings finesse game to the inshore redfish arena

“We call it the ‘Salty Ned ShrimpZ,’” says inshore saltwater guide and Z-Man pro, Captain C.A. Richardson. “It’s my newest little saltwater nugget for big redfish, snook and seatrout. When the water’s cold or extra clear—or any time fishing pressure is extreme—a Salty Ned can be even better than livebait. And now, rather than borrowing baits from our freshwater boxes, we’ve got a new Ned goody, all to ourselves.

In recent seasons, as Richardson and other intelligent inshore anglers recognized the parallels between freshwater bass tactics and those for redfish, seatrout and other saltwater species, a renewed approach emerged. “From the first day we experimented with a Ned rig under cold, bluebird skies, our results spoke volumes,” says Richardson, the brains behind Flats Class TV and University. “We’ve followed the evolution of freshwater finesse techniques and the rise of the Ned rig for smallmouth and largemouth bass from day one. So, it made perfect sense that similar methods and baits could excel in saltwater for a lot of reasons. Turns out, the Salty Ned is like a tasty little cocktail shrimp for selective inshore predators.”

A fishing industry first saltwater specific profile designed for the increasingly popular Ned Rig finesse technique, the Salty Ned ShrimpZ is a subtle 2.5-inch live shrimp mimic composed of 100-percent ElaZtech. Not only does the new finesse saltwater bait resemble an actual crustacean in anatomy, it’s buoyant, extra soft yet durable body gives anglers several key advantages.

“We’ve known from the start that Ned rigs can be highly effective for saltwater gamefish, particularly in the colder months when fish on the flats become finicky,” believes Z-Man President and bait designer Daniel Nussbaum. “What’s been particularly surprising, though, is the way saltwater anglers have so enthusiastically embraced size #1 hooks and 2-1/2-inch baits.

Take ’em Hunting grand prize winner Luedtke introduces friend to hunting

Outdoor activities are better with friends – including hunting. Noah Luedtke introduced his friend, Preston Cuddy, to turkey hunting last fall through the Take ’em Hunting challenge and gave him the start he needed. Now, Cuddy is keeping active in the field.

On July 13, Luedtke, of Martell, accepted the Take ’em Hunting grand prize John Deere Gator utility vehicle, donated by AKRS Equipment, in a ceremony at the AKRS Crete store.

Luedtke, 24, was selected randomly from more than 1,100 participants in the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s challenge to take a beginner hunting and submit a photo online. It was the third year for the seven-month challenge designed to encourage people to invite others to try the sport. Since the program began, it has introduced hunting to an estimated 5,400 Nebraskans of all ages.

Luedtke, whose father introduced him to hunting, took Cuddy on his first ever hunt; they hunted turkeys in southwest Nebraska.

“He grew up always wanting to learn how to hunt, but never had the opportunity to do so with his family,” Luedtke said. “He told me he wanted to experience hunting but did not know where to start.

Sportfishing Leaders Voice Their Opposition To Proposed Lead Fishing Tackle Restrictions

Over 200 leaders of the sportfishing industry co-signed a letter urging USFWS to reconsider prohibiting lead tackle on certain national wildlife refuges

Today, in response to a U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) draft rule prohibiting the use of lead fishing tackle on certain National Wildlife Refuges, the American Sportfishing Association (ASA) sent a letter  signed by 234 individuals representing companies and organizations in the recreational fishing industry to USFWS Director Martha Williams, urging the agency to reconsider the proposal.

The letter calls on USFWS to recognize that anglers should be allowed to use traditional fishing tackle unless science demonstrates negative impacts. Under the draft rule, USFWS would prohibit the use of lead ammunition and/or fishing tackle on ten National Wildlife Refuges that will soon be opened to hunting and fishing. The proposed rule provided no scientific evidence that lead fishing tackle is endangering wildlife populations in these areas.

“It is impressive to see such a large number of sportfishing businesses voicing their opposition to the USFWS’s plans,” said Mike Leonard, ASA’s vice president of Government Affairs. “While we appreciate that USFWS continues to expand fishing access at National Wildlife Refuges, the new proposed rule helps legitimize arbitrarily banning lead tackle. This proposal has no basis in science and will only inhibit anglers’ access to the water.”

“The sportfishing industry has always supported science-based conservation, but we also will oppose policies that place arbitrary restrictions on anglers’ ability to fish,” added Dave Bulthuis, president of Pure Fishing and ASA’s Government Affairs Committee Chairman. “To see this many companies from across the sportfishing industry collectively speak out against this proposed restriction on lead fishing tackle shows that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service made a serious misstep. Hopefully, it’s not too late, and the Service can revise this proposal to expand fishing access without any baseless accompanying restrictions.”

Unprecedented Wild Turkey Study Underway in Peace Garden State

The NWTF is helping fund the most thorough wild turkey ecology study in North Dakota to date. The new, multipronged research project — led by the University of North Dakota and the North Dakota Game and Fish Department — seeks to better understand the survival and productivity of North Dakota hens as part of the NDGFD’s translocation program.

“We are excited to partner with the North Dakota Game and Fish and the NWTF to be able to evaluate female turkey demographics in North Dakota in what will be the most intense study of turkey survival, movement and reproduction done in the state,” said Susan Ellis-Felege, Ph.D., UND professor of wildlife ecology and management and project lead for the study.

Year after year, the NDGFD receives calls from farmers about nuisance wild turkeys, including places such as livestock feedlots and even urban areas. These calls are especially widespread during years when harsh winters make forage for birds scarce.

To aid in the nuisance complaints, the department captures and relocates about 200 birds every year and places them on state WMA’s, a win for ranchers and hunters alike. Researchers will study the underpinnings of this unique program while also gathering other insightful information.

Translocating birds across state lines was the primary driver in the wild turkey’s remarkable restoration story throughout the latter end of the 20th century and has been thoroughly studied. However, translocating nuisance birds across North Dakota is a more recent endeavor that is not well-documented and still poses many unanswered questions about how birds respond to being moved to a new habitat.

Gamakatsu® G-Finesse Trebles Now Offered with Feathers

Gamakatsu®, the world’s leading manufacturer and innovator of fishing hooks and terminal tackle, introduces the G-Finesse Feathered Treble MH. Gamakatsu mainly based this design on the input of the late great, Aaron Martens. The existing medium-heavy G-Finesse Trebles took the bass world by storm six years ago, and the addition of life-like and vibrant feathers fills the lineup.

Like their predecessors, the G-Finesse feathered trebles utilize Tournament-Grade Wire construction, allowing the points to remain sharper, longer. That means anglers will use fewer of them while ensuring better hook-up percentages as the fishing day goes. Furthermore, they are stronger than hooks of the same diameter wire. They come with a Nano Smooth Coat that makes penetration even easier. Any fish that strikes gets stuck, and those that get stuck stay pinned until anglers unhook them.

These new trebles come two to a pack, adorned with either white or chartreuse premium feathers and complementary tinsel, hand-selected by Martens to tempt even the most finicky fish. Add them to any fast-moving lure to create a fluid appearance or to lures that demand pauses so the motion will continue in place. They’ll excel with topwaters, crankbaits, jerkbaits and spoons.

G-Finesse Feathered Treble MH Features:

Sizes: 6, 4, 2, 1, 1/0Colors: White/Tinsel, Chartreuse/TinselQty/Pkg: 2

From humble beginnings as Japan’s smallest fishing hook manufacturer in 1955, Gamakatsu® Ltd has evolved to become the world’s preeminent hook manufacturer. CMP Celebrates Opening of the 2022 National Matches with Double First Shot Ceremony

CAMP PERRY, Ohio – On the beautiful, sun-filled morning of July 12, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) hosted the opening event of the 2022 National Rifle and Pistol Matches – the First Shot Ceremony.

The First Shot serves as a welcoming for guests, participants, volunteers and staff eager to start the annual National Matches – held at the Camp Perry National Guard Training Facility. The Matches have assembled marksmen and women at Camp Perry since 1907 and has grown to feature several highpower, smallbore and long range rifle, as well as pistol and air gun events, to thousands each year.

As visitors lined up along the Lawrence Road Shooters’ Plaza by Camp Perry’s Rodriguez Range, an authentic B-25 bomber, Georgie’s Gal, blazed through the perfectly blue skies above. The aircraft was provided by Port Clinton’s Liberty Aviation Museum and made multiple passes overhead, displaying its timeless features. Pyrotechnics by cannon master Bob Gillmor and the Ohio National Guard’s Chief Kyle Gettys exploded on the range below to simulate World War II bombs as the plane passed by – thrilling guests on the ground.

When the visuals were over, the Color Guard raised the stars and stripes on the Plaza as Ohio National Guard Chaplain Nicholas Chou gave the invocation. Music was provided thanks to the 122nd Army Band, while Adjutant General of the State of Ohio, Major General John C. Harris, greeted those in attendance at the podium.

Distinguished emcee of the ceremony, CMP chairman and CEO, Judy Legerski, led the festivities – introducing guest speakers and emitting her own reflections on the Camp Perry.
