Use Fluorocarbon for Stealth

Use Fluorocarbon for Stealth is a proven tip for increasing your catch rate—especially in clear water or when targeting finicky fish. Here's why and how to make the most of it:

What Is Fluorocarbon Line?

Fluorocarbon is a type of fishing line made from a dense polymer that refracts light similarly to water, making it much less visible underwater than traditional monofilament or braided lines.

Why Use Fluorocarbon? 1. Low Visibility
  • Its near-invisibility underwater makes it ideal for clear water, shallow conditions, and pressure-heavy fisheries where fish spook easily.
  • Perfect for species like trout, bass, crappie, or inshore saltwater gamefish.
2. Abrasion Resistance
  • Fluorocarbon is tough against rocks, structure, and sharp fish teeth.
  • Useful around docks, submerged logs, or rocky bottom environments.
3. Sensitive and Strong
  • Its density gives you better sensitivity—great for detecting light bites.
  • Stronger and more durable than mono of the same diameter.
4. Sinks Naturally
  • Unlike monofilament, fluorocarbon sinks instead of floating.
  • This makes it ideal for jigs, nymphs, soft plastics, and subsurface lures.
How to Use Fluorocarbon Effectively
  • Use it as mainline or more commonly as a leader tied to braid or mono.
  • For stealth, match your fluorocarbon leader to water clarity and lure size:
    • Clear water/small lures: 6–8 lb test
    • Bass fishing or cover: 10–15 lb test
    • Saltwater flats or structure: 20–30 lb test
A Few Extra Tips
  • Use a strong knot like the double uni or FG knot when connecting fluorocarbon to braid.
  • Wet the line before tightening knots—fluoro is stiff and can burn if cinched dry.
  • Store it well—UV light and heat can degrade its performance over time.
