In early to mid-May, trout transition from their deep wintering holes into shallower littoral zones for spawning and active post-spawn feeding.
- Shoreline Edges: To maximize your time in the strike zone, focus casts parallel to the bank rather than perpendicular.
- Drop-offs and Shelves: Position yourself at the transition point where shallow flats meet deep water. These "shelves" are prime ambush points.
- Windward Banks: Target the side of the lake where the wind is blowing toward the shore, as this movement pushes plankton and baitfish into the shallows, attracting predatory trout.
When fishing rivers like the South Platte, water velocity dictates trout positioning.
- Eddies and Seams: Trout will hold in slower water directly behind rocks or along the "seams" where fast and slow currents meet to conserve energy while waiting for food.
- Tailwaters: Below dams, position your presentation in oxygenated "bubbles" or plunge pools where fish wait for disoriented prey.
- Submerged Structures: Always look for submerged logs, rocks, or weed beds, which provide shelter and primary ambush points.
