The biggest freshwater fish recorded is the giant freshwater stingray (Urogymnus polylepis), which can grow over 13 feet (4 meters) in length and weigh more than 660 pounds (300 kg). It is primarily found in Southeast Asia's rivers, including the Mekong and Chao Phraya.
Other massive freshwater fish include:
- Beluga Sturgeon – Can exceed 20 feet (6 meters) and weigh over 2,200 pounds (1,000 kg), mainly found in the Caspian and Black Seas but migrates into freshwater to spawn.
- Mekong Giant Catfish – Reaches 10 feet (3 meters) in length and 650 pounds (295 kg), native to the Mekong River.
- Arapaima (Pirarucu) – One of the largest freshwater fish in South America, growing up to 15 feet (4.5 meters) and weighing 440 pounds (200 kg).
- Alligator Gar – A prehistoric-looking fish found in North America that can grow up to 10 feet (3 meters) and weigh 350 pounds (159 kg).
Many of these species are threatened due to habitat loss and overfishing, making conservation efforts crucial.
