NWTF and National Deer Association Host Inaugural Veterans Hunt

EDGEFIELD, S.C. — Wild Turkey Federation in collaboration with the National Deer Association of South Carolina hosted a veterans deer hunt in Troy, South Carolina.

“The collaboration between NWTF and the National Deer Association exemplified the power of unity in crafting an event that resonated deeply with our veterans,” said Jennifer Hodge-McLain, member of the Lexington Longbeards chapter. “It showcased the strength that arises when organizations join forces for a common cause. This unique hunting experience allowed each veteran to forge a personal connection with nature, acknowledging their skills as seasoned outdoorsmen.”

The day was not just about hunting, as eight veterans gathered for a day of hunting, fellowship and unity at the Puckett Homestead, a National Deer Association’s leased property used for education, research, youth and military hunts.

Exceptional food added a touch of warmth to the outdoor endeavors, fostering conversations and shared moments among our honored guests. One veteran participant encapsulated the day of hunting well.

“I had a great time getting to know fellow veterans that shared the same passion for the outdoors as myself,” Myran Hunt said. “This felt more like a family get-together than a scheduled hunt.”

A poignant highlight of the event was the moment when one veteran achieved a significant milestone, harvesting his first buck. This accomplishment underscored the importance of providing meaningful experiences for veterans, connecting them with the great outdoors in a profound way.

Reflecting on the memorable day, Hodge-McLain notes the success of the event and looks forward to continued collaborative events between the NWTF and NDA in the future.

“We extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of this veterans hunt,” she said. “Your support and collaboration not only made this event possible but also created an atmosphere where our veterans could connect and relish the joys of the great outdoors.”

About the National Wild Turkey Federation

Since 1973, the National Wild Turkey Federation has invested over half a billion dollars into wildlife conservation and has conserved or enhanced over 22 million acres of critical wildlife habitat. The organization continues to drive wildlife conservation, forest resiliency and robust recreational opportunities throughout the U.S. by working across boundaries on a landscape scale.

2023 is the NWTF’s 50 th anniversary and an opportunity to propel the organization’s mission into the future while honoring its rich history. For its 50 th anniversary, the NWTF has set six ambitious goals: positively impact 1 million acres of wildlife habitat; raise $500,000 for wild turkey research; increase membership to 250,000 members; dedicate $1 million to education and outreach programs; raise $5 million to invest in technology and NWTF’s people; and raise $5 million to build toward a $50 million endowment for the future.  Learn how you can help us reach these lofty goals.
