Before the Hunt

Firearm Safety Rules

There are four primary rules of firearm safety that must be followed without exception.

1. Muzzle Control: Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. A "safe direction" means a direction where an accidental discharge will not injure anyone or cause property damage.
2. Finger Off the Trigger: Keep your finger outside the trigger guard and off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
3. Identify Your Target: Be absolutely certain of your target and what lies beyond it. Never shoot at sound or movement.
4. Know Your Equipment: Understand the operating mechanisms of your equipment and its components. This includes knowing how to load, unload, and clear any malfunctions safely.

• Field Dressing: Always use a sharp, appropriate tool and cut away from your body when field dressing game.

Tree Stand Safety

Tree stands pose a significant fall risk. Follow these guidelines:

• Always use a full-body harness, also known as a fall arrest system.
• Stay connected to the tree from the time you leave the ground until you return.
• Use a haul line to raise and lower your equipment after you are securely in the stand.
