Fishing Tip - Know the Fish You’re Targeting

Know the Fish You're Targeting

Understanding the habits, preferences, and environment of the species you're after is key to successful fishing. Each fish behaves differently, and knowing what makes them tick gives you a major edge.

Study Their Behavior
  • Feeding Times: Some fish feed at dawn and dusk (like bass or trout), while others are more active at night (like catfish).
  • Preferred Depths: Species like crappie might suspend mid-water, while bottom-feeders like carp stick to the bottom.
  • Seasonal Patterns: Fish change location and behavior with the seasons. For example, bass spawn in spring and move deeper in summer.
Understand Their Habitat
  • Structure-Oriented: Many species relate to structures—logs, rocks, weed beds, docks.
  • Current Preference: Trout prefer fast, oxygen-rich streams; largemouth bass favor still or slow-moving water.
  • Temperature Sensitivity: Fish are cold-blooded. Water temperature affects their feeding activity and depth.
Use the Right Tactics
  • Match bait and lure type to the fish's natural diet:
    • Bass: Crawfish imitations, frogs, soft plastic worms.
    • Trout: Insects, small minnows, flies.
    • Catfish: Cut bait, stink bait, chicken liver.
  • Choose gear that fits the size and fight of the fish — lighter tackle for panfish, heavy rods for big game.

Knowing the fish you're targeting is like doing homework before a test — it gives you the confidence and tools to succeed on the water.
