Clinic Provides Tune-Up for Max Soviak Rimfire Sporter Rifle Match

In preparation for the Max Soviak National CMP Rimfire Sporter Match the following day, 41 competitors took advantage of in-position, live-fire training at the CMP’s sporter match clinic, Friday, July 7 on Camp Perry’s Viale Range.

The match was named for Max Soviak, a US Navy Corpsman, of Berlin Heights, Ohio, who was killed by a suicide bomber while assisting evacuees in Kabul, Afghanistan. This year, the CMP paid homage to Max’s service, sacrifice and memory by naming the annual CMP Rimfire Sporter Match in his honor.

Clinic attendees were provided an opportunity to get themselves acquainted with the rimfire range a day in advance of the match and had ample time and ammunition to brush up on prone, sitting and standing positions, firing in slow-fire and rapid-fire stages at 50 and 25 yards.

Rimfire shooters compare notes on off-hand shooting technique.

The CMP provided 50 rounds of ammunition to all participants and loaner sporter rifles to those who needed them for the clinic. Attendees who brought additional ammunition used the extra rounds to polish their practice session. The live-fire class was run in two relays, so families and friends were able to share equipment.

Brian Young, 43, of Wattsburg, PA, and his son, Gunnar, 13, enjoyed some family time on the range and used the clinic as a warm-up for the Saturday match. On match day Brian fired the match in the open sights class & Gunnar trailed by just seven points, firing in the telescopic-class. Like other families at the range both days, the match provided a chance to enjoy the sport in a family-friendly atmosphere.
