Her Venustas Heated Vest

It’s smack in the middle of winter and, regardless of whether we are inside or outdoors, many of us find ourselves a bit cold at times. We just need a little something to help warm us up. One way to do that is with a heated vest.

Venustas makes a heated vest for women which I have found to provide quick and long-lasting warmth for my body. Thin carbon fiber heating elements generate heat across the collar, the middle back, and underneath two front pockets. This setup generally keeps the core of your body warm, though I would like a heating element located at the lower back where I frequently feel the cold when I am outside. The heat can be adjusted with three settings: high, medium, and low. This vest, which comes in black or beige, is made of 100% nylon, has a zip closure, and is machine washable. The women’s vest has a streamlined fit which I feel keeps the heat close to the body. The size chart is helpful to ensure a good fit.

The vest is heated with 7.4V 5000mAh certified battery, advertised to operate up to 8-9 hours on low, 5-6 hours on medium, or 3 hours on high on a single charge. The battery pack has a DC charging port which takes four and a half hours to fully charge. The battery pack, which sits in a pocket when in use, has a USB port to charge your phone or smart devices if needed.

There are times when I get a little cold – sitting outside at a late season football game, or even inside if I’m not doing much – and a heated vest just gives me that quick boost of warmth. The Venustas gives me that option.

Pros: quick warmth; good fit. Cons: bulky battery pack; power indicator light is located on the outside of the vest which is annoyingly visible.

Custom Knife and hunting Equipment with Current Composites

We at Current Composites have been serving the knife and hunting industry since 1962 and we have only increased our proficiency in our craft since then. Our specialization in the production of G-10 has allowed us to become an invaluable asset in the creation of custom weapon handles. With the progress and innovation that we have spearheaded in the community, we have found ways to create handles for tools made from our G-10 material that is unlike any you have ever seen. Over the years we have created countless pieces for our customers and each of those pieces reflects a bit of who they are. To achieve this, we employ a wide range of techniques to ensure that every piece is unique. To get a better idea of what we can do and how we do it, here are details regarding the many customization options that we give to our customers.

Color Options

The first aspect we offer regarding our customization options is a wide variety of color options. A perk of our manufacturing process allows us to produce G-10 in over 20 different colors. We can add special perks to certain colors. Dayglow and orange colored G-10, for example, will glow under blacklight, which is a cool addition for any piece. We can also apply these colors in unique patterns and combine them in different ways. Our combination techniques include multilayering, burling, and marbling. We have innovated unique decorative applications in fingerprint patterns, faux fabric patterns, and organic patterns. We can blend colors and arrange them together to create organic appearances, which would create a sought-after design. From natural colors and camouflage to bright and vivid colors that are radiant, we can create practically any design you can imagine. However, colors and patterns are only one piece of our customization options.

Infused G-10

We have the ability to mix our G-10 with other materials to create unique finishes and textures on our products. We can combine G-10 with copper to give it an extra shine which will ultimately add to its elegance. We can also add textures for an additional element to the material. We can make a fine or coarse handle or something in between. We can create a handle that has zero drag by sealing it with a glossy finish. We can give it a dip, pivot, or sand it down to make it easier to grip, depending on your preference. We also offer faux leather or turtle shell surface textures. Overall, combining the G-10 with other materials allows us to make products with extremely unique characteristics. These numerous options allow our customers to get the perfect piece for their specifications.

Conclusion

Overall, with our expertise in creating extremely unique and entirely customizable G-10/FR4 handles, we have the capabilities to complete any custom order that comes our way. We at Current Composites have long been involved in the hunting industry. We make handles for knives, guns, tools like hammers and screwdrivers, axes, pots, pans, and more. Whether you live near our location in East Haven Connecticut or live in another country if you need custom handles for your tools then give us a call today. We strive to do every job the right way every time. As soon as you place an order, we will get to work creating the best and most unique G-10 handles for you.

Angler Conservation | Aaron Adams, PhD. of Bonefish & Tarpon Trust

By Chuck Lee

Anchor fly had the privilege of sitting down with the Director of Science and Conservation for Bonefish and Tarpon Trust and Senior Scientist at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute at Florida Atlantic University, Dr. Aaron Adams, for an interview on some of the biggest challenges facing our watersheds.Dr. Adams highlights some of the main concerns we’re up against as anglers and how to help combat these impacts. Please see below for our full interview.

Q. What do you see are the top threats facing our watersheds?A. One is water infrastructureThis means we need to address broken sewage treatment infrastructure, convert septic to sewer, properly deal with stormwater treatment and runoff. So much of what we are doing on land flows into our waterways (my areas of concern are estuaries and coastal waters), and for the most part this is not being addressed. Our water infrastructure is very broken (from unsafe drinking water to too many nutrients causing fish killing algae blooms).

A. Another is habitat loss and degradation. Without healthy habitats we can’t have healthy fisheries. Yet our system of saltwater fisheries management doesn’t include habitat. Some fisheries are getting to the point where fisheries management measures like harvest limitations or closed seasons aren’t effective at preventing population declines. It’s habitat loss and degradation, which aren’t part of fisheries management. More info Here

Q. What are the underlying themes that are impacting habitat loss and degradation? And are  individual anglers a part of this problem?A. The common threat to fisheries whether salt or freshwater  habitat loss and water quality demise. On top of that of course, climate change. But the effect of climate change is greatly exacerbated by habitat loss and water quality. There is also a lack of engagement by most anglers. By not becoming engaged anglers are kind of shooting themselves in the foot. The opportunities now vs 10 years are much smaller.

Q. Why do you think that engagement is difficult for anglers?A. Part of it is awareness, part of it is apathy, and to be blunt, part of it is laziness. If you were to talk to somebody 75 or 80 years old no matter where they were located or fished, they would describe fishing when they were 15 years old as much better than a 15 year old now. Part of the issue is not seeing the immediate changes in fishing. Part of it is That incremental decline that makes it harder for people to be engaged. I think part of the problem especially for newer anglers is a phenomenon called Sliding Historical Baseline. Which means; say this is your first day of fishing—And everything you’ve experienced is gauged on that. A more appropriate historical baseline would be 50-100 years or more. By thinking in longer terms it puts a different context on today. That’s a big challenge especially for new anglers coming in, everything they know is new but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s good. And another part too is not just the knowledge of the ecosystem or state of the ecosystem and how it affects fish, but also fishing ethics and etiquette.

ProTek Tactical Watch Brand Launched by Luminox Founder, Former Owner

New Brand of All Terrain Watches Launches at SHOT 2022

Just in time for this year’s Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoors Tradeshow (SHOT), Time Concepts is introducing ProTek, its new brand of tritium tactical watches, from the Former Owner and Founder of Luminox, Barry Cohen. Stemming from the successful history of Luminox, ProTek is designed for a similar core group that includes Law Enforcement, Fire Fighters, SWAT, Tactical, Military, Special Forces, and First Responders. The exciting brand debut will take place at the Time Concepts Booth #72927 during the show taking place from January 18-21 at Caesars Convention Hall in Las Vegas.

Designed in Switzerland, ProTek is an American brand with superior self-powered Swiss tritium illumination, and the brand chose the best quality components available to ensure years of problem free wear with no issues, including sapphire crystals with antireflective coatings for all watches.  The brand made no compromises in creating very high-quality watches in three series to include a Carbon Composite Case dive series, a Steel dive series, and a Titanium field series. Straps are either genuine rubber or specially treated waterproof leather.  All watches are manufactured in a spotless assembly facility that has safeguards in place to ensure excellent quality watches are produced, with an air filtration system that cleans the air inside, equivalent to an ISO7 cleanroom standard, with only a maximum of 10,000 pieces of dust particles that are bigger or equal to 0.5um.

“This is a very exciting launch for us as it brings us back to our roots making watches for some of our toughest heroes, using the same unsurpassed self-powered illumination I pioneered with my former brand, so I’m back in “my lane” so to speak,” said Barry Cohen, Managing Partner of Time Concepts. “Our brand name defines us with Pro meaning made for professionals, and Tek signifying a superior self-powered illumination technology that enables each watch to glow continuously for 25 years, allowing for time-at-a-glance even in complete darkness. ProTek watches are made for those that protect us including law enforcement, fire fighters, tactical, military, special forces, fire personnel, and first responders. ProTek Watches are Rugged at Heart and created to withstand the rigors of an active and demanding lifestyle.”

The ProTek brand combines superior quality with reasonable pricing and with suggested retails of $525 to $595.

“Federal Ammunition is proud to be the Centennial Sponsor of the 31st Big Game Awards to celebrate the synergy between our 100 years in business and the conservation of the nation’s wildlife species,” commented Federal’s Conservation Manager, Jon Zinnel. “Federal has long supported conservation efforts both through the excise taxes we pay on the sale of ammunition as part of the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration program, as well as through philanthropic support of conservation and advocacy organizations,” stated Zinnel. “We are excited to celebrate the successes of hunters having the opportunity to hunt amazing animals only because of extraordinary efforts to conserve them and the habitat on which they depend.”

When the National Collection of Heads and Horns was dedicated in May 1922, Boone and Crockett Club member and the collection’s original curator William T. Hornaday noted that “The National Collection of Heads and Horns was founded and formed as a duty owed to the American people and to the vanishing big game of the world… As wild animal extermination now is proceeding all over the world, it is saddening to think that 100 years hence many of the species now shown in our collection will have become totally extinct.” However, most of those North American species have not gone extinct and, in fact have thrived thanks largely to sustainable wildlife management and the consistent funding provided through the excise tax paid by companies like Federal Ammunition.

In response to public interest generated by the National Collection of Heads and Horns in the 1920s, and increased interest in the recovery and conservation of big game species, the Club established an official measurement and scoring system for trophy big game. The National Collection and the measurement system were initially conceived to record species of North American big game thought to be vanishing. As conservation efforts began to pay dividends and populations recovered, so did the number of mature male specimens. Wildlife managers and others in the scientific community soon recognized that the system was an effective means of tracking the success of new conservation policies and programs. Trophy entry into the Boone and Crockett Club’s records program now occurs during three-year periods, followed by a public display of the finest trophies entered in each category and the Big Game Awards banquet. Only the top trophies in each category are invited to final awards judging and only invited trophies remeasured by the Judges Panel are eligible to receive awards.

“The nation’s awakening to the conservation crisis a century ago led to the passage of legislation supported by the Boone and Crockett Club, including the excise tax paid by the shooting sports industry that has largely bankrolled our conservation successes,” commented Tony A. Schoonen, chief executive officer of the Boone and Crockett Club. “It is fitting that the centennial of Federal and the centennial of a display that helped to raise that awareness coincide. I have had the pleasure of working with Federal for over 20 years and their commitment to conservation is significant and very real. We are happy to have Federal as our Centennial Sponsor of the 31st Big Game Awards so that we can celebrate our conservation successes together.”

onX Hunt Examines New Wave of Hunters,How Hunting Has Changed During Pandemic

Missoula, Montana — onX Hunt, in partnership with Southwick Associates, has completed a deep dive look into the new wave of hunters that have entered the space in the past few years, with a focus on those who started hunting at the beginning of the COVID pandemic. In addition, onX Hunt also looked at more experienced hunters and their reactions to the new faces.

While everyone acknowledges the pandemic has sparked a resurgence in interest in the outdoors, no one really had a handle on the size of this wave until now. 2020 saw a 25% increase in hunters in the United States. This comes after decades of decline that had hunting advocates and state agencies scrambling with R3 (Retain, Recruit, Reactivate) efforts.

Not surprisingly, most of the new hunters cited COVID-related reasons for having the interest and time to take up hunting. What many may find surprising is the degree to which existing hunters are excited by this influx. Complaints of overcrowding or inexperienced hunters seemed plenty, but the data show that 65% of existing hunters support the new crop, compared to only 27% who had concerns.

Diversity is also improving, with 17% of these new hunters being non-white, and 22% of them identifying as female. This new generation is also overwhelmingly motivated by the ability to harvest their own meat, with 47% reporting that as their primary motivation to hunt. As questions about food safety increase, so has the desire to control personal food chains.

A few numbers also stood out, primarily when hunters were asked where they turned for education and guidance. The impact of the past few decades of lost hunters is readily apparent as a family member only makes up 20% of mentors for new hunters. Instead, this new generation has relied on friends who hunt (more than 40%) or a spouse/partner (20%).
