I would guess many of you new members were at the Expo as was I today. I spoke to them about ideas for Hunt Post. Also since starting this group we have not used the opportunity to talk about hunting and shared stories and ideas. For me I am looking to hunt more next year in Colorado and would like to get access to some private land for white tails out east. So let's get this group going.

FYI I will also be staring a group and a page about stopping Wolf Introduction and it is a project I have been working for 2 years. If you want to start getting involved get a shirt. 75% of proceeds go to Wounded Warriors. https://teespring.com/nowolvesM0QL2RX7YS_copy_1?pid=2&cid=2397

I am truly amazed every year with the ever building number of archers that live the last two weeks of September Archery season in a small tent up in the high country and during the rut. I decided one day why put up with the crowds that have no maximum requirement and continue to grow every year. I had 3 different time in 1 day that one 2 legged elk bugler was trying to call in another two legged elk bugler. If it had not gotten to the point that one tried to close in on the ladder, they would probably sill telling everyone in camp about the bull they had calling for 2 hours!
The way I look at it elk are not born the last couple of days in August, they are alive 12 months a year and do different things to cope with weather, moisture, feed, and the rut. The highest priority in Mid August for example is keeping cool. The Bulls are in their batchelopr herds and feed in the morning, then retriet to the cololest quiet place they can find. North slope spruces for instance. Durring the day they lay there and process their breakfast grass. Byr 4 pm they are down right thristy from processing and temperature so they head for the water holes. Tghis is when water hole sitting can be very successful. The same is true for the cows and calves although they don't travel with the big bulls.

Rules
do all the water hole checking for tracks during mid day when the elk are bedded and feel safe you don't want to blow them out. You can tell what is coming in to a home by the tracks. If you have the luxury of owning a trail cam use it.
We always do, but we always hunt private property also. Private property is the biggest point. Every summer herd has a leader that has seen at least 8 hunting seasons, they know where to go and stay on private land... where they have never been bumped before. They have a knowledgeable history. You on the other hand are the rookie.
The best way I have found to get to private land hunting and success where either the elk are there to begin with or more come in later is with a company called DiscountedHunts.Net .They have a lot of DIY type hunts and they are at good prices for the hunt that they are. In fact they require the landowner to do some things to help make you successful. They seem to always have things to make you the most successful on their hunts. They have a Semi-Guided hunt that is the same as a DIY or trespass hunt, but they required the landowner to meet you on the land. Show you where his property boundary fence lines are located, then where the elk, feed, bed, and water, so you have them important daily triangle of activity. Then he leaves you with his cell phone number in case you need him later. Remember when Saturday morning comes you are on your own but you have the knowledge of what you would have had if you prescounted it the weekend before.
We have not been 100% but in the last 4 years the 4 of us have always been 3 out of 4 if not 5 out of 5 filling, with bulls and cows.
