The Raptor Education Foundation (REF) has been promoting environmental literacy since 1980 by providing schools, corporations, conventions, and gatherings of all sizes unique innovative programs and seminars that connect people with the natural world. REF utilizes an extensive cast of live, non-releasable raptors to focus attention on environmental concepts and issues. Other environmental Consulting Services are also available.  These consulting services benefit from REF’s extensive natural history experience and network of associations at an international level.  REF has field experience in Africa, the Caribbean, Micronesia, Fiji, Mexico, Central and South America, Australia, Indonesia, and Russia.

What is a Raptor?

Eagles, hawks, falcons, owls, kites, osprey and harriers are all raptors! Their beaks are hooked, rather than straight, and they seize and kill their quarry using powerful feet and sharp talons. In the annals of human history, raptors have always been an integral part of mankind’s material and spiritual world. Over 4,000 years ago raptors began to be used in some cultures to help put food on the table via the art and science of falconry. Spiritually, they symbolize the highest aspirations of purpose, power, clarity, and focus. Eagles, for instance, are mentioned in virtually all of  the great religious texts, and they are central to the spiritual beliefs of many of  America’s  native peoples. Today, scientists use the world’s 557 raptor species as barometers of environmental health. Drastic declines in the populations of Bald Eagles and Peregrine Falcons, for example, pointed to the larger problems posed by habitat  disturbance and destruction, environmental toxins, and shootings to name a few. The Raptor Education Foundation (REF) uses these magnificent birds as ambassadors for the vast “silent majority” of living creatures: the diversity of plants, animals, and organisms that grow and support human life. The raptors in the Foundation’s care are permanently impaired, unable to survive any longer in the wild. Instead, they have found a new home and a new role as educators, and nature’s ambassadors. In a hyper technological age they connect us back to the elemental forces of nature.  In a digitally scattered and confused culture, they focus our vision. In a world trapped in a myriad of abstractions, raptors help connect us back to the primary organic realm.  REF is not a rehabilitation facility. REF takes over when rehab fails and provides these magnificent birds a meaningful sanctuary to live out the rest of their lives. For instance, eagles in captivity can live past 50 years of age.

The name Krazy Beaver came about when Jason and a friend were off-roading in an area west of Albuquerque and Rio Rancho known as the Rio Puerco.  Jason’s friend made the comment that he needed to name the shovel something that people wouldn’t forget.  He asked Jason what the tool looked like.  He responded with,  “A Beaver Tail”. Hence the name “Beaver”.

After off-roading, Jason was at a restaurant and began pondering the patent pending shovel.  He thought it was “Crazy” that the shovel had never been submitted to the USPTO over the course of the last Century.  It was that idea that led to the name “Krazy Beaver™”.  Jason has since filed for the Trademarked name “Krazy Beaver™” through the United States Patent and Trademark Office and the rest is history!

CHC was established in 1972 by Professor Sam Baker of Fresno, California. Physical therapy wasn’t getting her up to walk and would just leave if she was being tended to by a doctor or nurse. They wouldn’t give us a walker so we found an empty room with a walker in it and we brought it back to her room. We told her Team Whiskey® was going to get her up to walk.

Team Whiskey® was an out of place name in the hospital. This made her laugh and smile as we helped and encouraged her to recovery.  We got her to walk out of the hospital on her own (when all the doctors, therapists, and nurses said she would need assistance) after a three week stay.  The day she walked out of the hospital was the happiest and proudest moment of our lives.

We are now booking for the 2023 coho season at Becharof Lodge on the Egegik River. The 2022 season was a most memorable one, thanks to the many great people who fished with us. The number one compliment we received was how fun it was to spend time with so many special people (staff and guests) in this part of remote Alaska. The second most praise was for Goni’s incredible cooking, something which always surprises guests who arrive thinking that just because they’re fishing in remote Alaska that the quality of food will decline. It doesn’t.

The fishing was tough at times, as good as we’ve seen it at others. Much of Alaska received rain throughout most of the summer, and as a result many rivers throughout the state flowed at record high levels all summer, right through our coho fishing.

Coho fishing on the Egegik River was great with eggs, and beads did well, too. Combining a bit of cured salmon eggs with soft beads was our top producer. Jigs, be they twitched or fished beneath a float, also produced consistent bites. Later in the season the flyfishing was excellent, with coho salmon being caught on surface poppers and many other patterns. There were some high catch silver salmon days among accomplished fly anglers who were in camp!

Though the coho bite was consistent every morning, from mid-season, on, the salmon bite did slow by mid-day, on average. This was the case in rivers throughout Bristol Bay. In fact, we spoke with many guides and lodges in the region, and this was a common theme in the rivers they fished, too. Some of the lodges who have their own floatplanes claimed the Egegik River was the best, most consistent coho fishing in Bristol Bay.

Due to our remote location and the rising costs associated with fuel, bush plane services, food, shipping, and many other components associated with operating a remote salmon fishing lodge in remote Alaska, there’s a rise in pricing heading into the 2023 season.

Still, coho fishing spots are booking up quickly as the Egegik River continues to be one of Alaska’s top coho streams. So check out the 2023 dates below, see which group fits your timeline and let’s go fishing. Life’s not slowing down and prices won’t get any cheaper. We’d love to have you experience what makes this one of the premier silver salmon rivers in all of Alaska.

Quigley-Ford Long Range Hunting Scopes were conceived and developed by Randy Ford of Ontario, Canada. Born in 1954, Randy has been a lifelong hunter, and fisherman, who has always reached out to solve equipment issues. Randy has shared many hunting and fishing opportunities with older masters, always eager to learn from their experience.

One of his favourite movies was “Quigley Down Under “ which influenced the name of his lines of scopes. Slovenia is a truly unique place for fly fishing. It has become a popular destination for good reason. It is a stunning destination with tremendous diversity in terrain and rivers. The western part of this small country has an abundance of beautiful, fishable waters. In the northern/alpine region, the streams and rivers are cold all year long, making them highly oxygenated and an ideal habitat for cold-water fish like trout even in the hottest time of the year.

Fly fishing in Slovenia is normally a bit easier because of the low-nutrient (oligotrophic) nature of the streams - fish just have to eat all the time in order to get ready for the cold winter.
