Boone and Crockett Club Presents Conservation and Stewardship Award to USDA Under Secretary Robert Bonnie

During their recent spring meeting, the Boone and Crockett Club presented Robert Bonnie, USDA Under Secretary for Farm Production and Conservation, with its Conservation and Stewardship Award. The Club’s most prestigious award for conservation partners, the Conservation and Stewardship Award is given annually to the organization or individual that best exemplifies excellence in natural resource conservation and stewardship—core values of the Boone and Crockett Club and its founder, Theodore Roosevelt. Bonnie accepted the award after presenting keynote remarks during the Club’s annual spring dinner on March 27 at the 89th North American Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

“The Boone and Crockett Club’s Conservation and Stewardship Award was created to recognize an individual or organization that plays an essential role in implementing Theodore Roosevelt’s vision of Conservation: acts of guarding, protecting, developing, and using natural resources wisely and sustainably; and Stewardship: planning for and managing natural resources responsibly,” commented James L. Cummins, President of the Boone and Crockett Club. “Robert Bonnie clearly represents this vision through his actions to implement collaborative conservation on working landscapes across this country. I have personally worked closely with Robert for many years, as have many other members and staff of the Club—we all agree that he is most deserving of this prestigious award for his commitment to conservation and stewardship throughout his career.”

Robert Bonnie is an avid outdoor enthusiast and a dedicated conservation leader. For four decades, he has worked toward developing innovative approaches to conserving America’s natural resources by creating incentives for farmers, ranchers, and forest owners to implement stewardship activities on private lands. From August 2013 to January 2017, Robert served as Under Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and in 2021, he began serving as USDA’s Under Secretary for Farm Production and Conservation. In these roles, he has developed collaborative, landscape-scale conservation approaches, including policies to restore ecosystems, address climate change, conserve endangered species, and protect watersheds. Bonnie has also led USDA’s efforts to improve habitat for big game migration corridors through the department’s highly successful Working Lands for Wildlife initiative.

Cummins concluded, “The Boone and Crockett Club is honored to recognize Robert’s tireless and selfless devotion to furthering conservation and stewardship of our natural resources on public and private lands across America.”

VASQUE RE:Connect Now Shoe Review

Anyone who has spent any significant amount of time in the outdoors knows about the Vasque brand of boots and shoes for the outdoors. This brand has been creating best in class boots for decades and it is one of the trusted boots for hikers and backpackers. They are known for comfort and durability as well as a variety of styles to suit various terrains and weather conditions.

The new RE:connect collection from Vasque has heads turning for the great style as well as the environmentally friendly ethos for this line up. The lineup includes two completely different shoes the RE:CONNECT HERE and the RE:CONNECT NOW. The HERE is designed to breath with a recycled polyester upper mesh with an anatomical last wrapping around your foot allowing you to move. The NOW is designed for comfort and stability with a wider heel and forefoot design and internal sleeve for midfoot support and comfort.

We chose the RE:CONNECT NOW to test and we are super pleased with the results of this shoe. We had the opportunity to put both a men’s and women’s shoe through testing from this line. These shoes are wide and comfortable and they remind you that it is okay to be comfortable and outside at the same time. We chose these shoes specifically for getting outside. Every winter my wife and I look for a pair of shoes each to take us out on Spring walks to get back into shape after a long winter spent mostly inside. We need to get in shape and the dog needs to gets back in to shape.

RE:CONNECT NOW Key Features

A durable and waterproof suede upper with a breathable mesh collar.A high-rebound footbed for added comfort.Vasque’s exclusive Vibram® Ground Control LiteBase with Megagrip compound outsole for superior traction.A dual-density EVA midsole for cushioning and support. An EcoTWX® Tweed upper which is environmentally friendly and durable.

Comfort and Durability

Vasque has long built great boots and these shoes are no exception. They are comfortable and enjoyable to wear all day. I chose the white pair for testing the men’s shoes and Marjorie chose the black pair for day to day wear. I haven’t owned a pair of white shoes in several years and these look fantastic no matter what I am wearing and they just take a little more effort to keep clean. The soles of these shoes are outstanding providing a tremendous amount of grip whether you are walking on trails, the street or on dirt. These soles really help whether you are on dry or wet ground and provide the kind of grip that you want regardless of the conditions.

The vast amount of these shoes come from Recycled materials from the 100% Recycled Ripstop Mesh Upper and that kind of goes all the way through the shoes including the 60% content laces. One of the features I really like is the internal fit sleeve and the thicker wider feel of these shoes. The lightweight feel of these are fantastic and I really enjoy the way these lace up allowing you to lace them in a variety of strengths for secure support for hiking and more open for everyday use.

Former NFL Players Bait Hooks, Catch Smiles at Houston Area Youth Fishing Event

Galveston, Texas—More than 100 anglers and their families joined a dozen retired NFL players and other volunteers at Galveston Bay State Park on Saturday, March 30, for a day of surf fishing and beach time.

The Union Sportsmen’s Alliance (USA) joined Texas native and former Kansas City Chiefs fullback Kimble Anders and other members of the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) Houston Chapter, Running Back Giving Back Foundation, and Texas Parks and Wildlife to provide a free, community-based event. All the youth anglers received a free fishing rod and reel to take home at the USA’s first-ever NFLPA-led Take Kids Fishing event.

With sunshine, temperatures reaching the upper 70s, and a light breeze, the waves were still pretty rough, said Kyle O’Haver, superintendent of Galveston Island State Park. Even so, participants caught a few hardhead catfish and whiting using cut squid and mullet for bait.

“As a park manager, it’s pretty exciting to partner with NFL greats like Kimble Anders,” said O’Haver. “More importantly, we had a beautiful beach day for the kids.”

“The kids didn’t care about the surf. They were just happy to play at the beach,” said LaChelle (LJ) Jackson, a community affairs specialist who works with current and retired professional athletes to organize events like this. She took her six-year-old niece who had a blast. “I’ve been getting calls all week about when we’re doing another one,” added Jackson.

Spika Dover Hauler Pack Review

I really thought my knees were going to explode under the weight of my pack.  It was October 2022 and my close friend; DJ and I were struggling to help each other stand up to begin the multi-mile pack to the truck. Under the final hour of daylight, I had been fortunate to arrow a gross Boone and Crocket size mule deer. DJ is a fisheries and wildlife biologist and estimated the weight of the animal to be north of 350 pounds. Since it was just the two of us, we had split the meat in half and I had the cape and antlers, plus gear testing the limits of the pack. We estimate the weight of each pack to exceed 80lbs. I’ve had elk hind quarters in my pack which are supposed to be the epitome of “heavy” for us lower 48 guys, and this mule deer made those elk packs feel easy. We would shuffle a few feet and have to stop, over and over again for about two hours to make it a few miles. I loved every single step of that hike out of that little basin.  It was just like every daydream come true. Last fall, I killed a bull that required hiking up 700 vertical feet.  It took multiple trips and after two seasons of hunting with the Spika Dover Hauler pack, it hasn’t flinched when things get tough. As someone who is a sticker for gear I have been entirely pleased with this pack.

The brand Spika is an Australian company through which DJ, and I had purchased our packs from a few years ago. I’ve been so impressed with it; I’ve been an evangelist amongst my circle of hunting buddies. The pack is comparable to many of the brands we have here, but it fits a great price point for the value and toughness.

https://amzn.to/4cGevTaThe Dover Hauler Pack

It comes with two sizes of packs on the hauler frame.  It’s a metric so bear with me. It comes in 40L and 80L packs. The 80L pack is equivalent to about 4,800 cubic inches. The fabric is durable 500 denier DWR treated nylon body and reinforced base. Essentially a soft and quiet body, but moisture resistant material. It held up really well throughout my adventures. There is a quick detach rain cover built into the bottom pocket of the pack. Last elk season I got caught in a rain storm and hid under the pack to stay as dry as possible. One element I really like is the expandable capacity for the top of the main bag.  It makes things easy to organize. In fact, there have been situations where I have placed entire meat backs in garbage bags directly into the main compartment of the bag. It will fit an entire quarter of an elk.

Biarri Camouflage is a pattern specific to the company and while I am not the foremost expert on camo patterns. I’ll say, I like it and find no problems here.

THIRD CIRCUIT DENIES REHEARING IN SAF PA GUN RIGHTS VICTORY

The Third U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has denied a petition for a rehearing in the Second Amendment Foundation’s victory in a case challenging Pennsylvania statutes that prohibit law-abiding young adults from carrying firearms for self-defense and prevents them from acquiring a state license to carry (LTCF) because of their age. The case is known as Lara v. Evanchick.

The petition for an en banc rehearing had been filed by attorneys representing the Commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Police. SAF is joined in the case by the Firearms Policy Coalition and three private citizens, including Madison M. Lara, for whom the case is named. They are represented by attorneys David H. Thompson, Peter A. Patterson and John D. Ohlendorf at Cooper & Kirk, Washington, D.C.

Writing for the majority, Circuit Judge Kent A. Jordan explained, “The petition for rehearing filed by appellant in the above-entitled case having been submitted to the judges who participated in the decision of this Court and to all the other available circuit judges of the circuit in regular active service, and no judge who concurred in the decision having asked for rehearing, and a majority of the judges of the circuit in regular service not having voted for rehearing, the petition for rehearing by the panel and the Court en banc, is DENIED.”

“We’re satisfied with the court’s decision,” said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb. “It’s an important win. The Third Circuit has affirmed that the Second Amendment applies to young adults, and that 1791 is the historical marker for understanding the right to keep and bear arms. Finally, the court has said 18-to-20-year-olds can open carry during a state of emergency in Pennsylvania.”

“We’ve been fighting this battle for more than three years,” noted SAF Executive Director Adam Kraut, who is a Pennsylvania resident and practicing attorney in the state. “The court’s decision is an important step forward to getting this issue resolved.”

Amanda Lynn Mayhew is Just Hunting Life

What do you think about this?

How long have you been hunting?

I have been hunting for well over 30 years, born and raised in Northern Ontario, Canada. Hunting is a way of life, it always has been, growing up immersed in the outdoors I actually was ignorant to the rest of the world and the hunts it includes from the Savannahs of Africa to the badlands of Alberta and I feel blessed to have been able to travel and experience these exotic hunts.

What got you interested in hunting in the first place?

My father is the one that got me interested in hunting. He taught me that what we hunt and harvest is what we eat. I always found it very peaceful to be out in the outdoors with him and rewarding to bring home meat to my family. That connection to nature and the tradition of providing for my loved ones really sparked my interest in hunting. My father was a man that loved the outdoors and shared as much as he could with his family. My mom was the angler in the family and my dad the hunter, although mom loved to eat the meat we brought home and liked to target practice she was not one to harvest animals.

What is your favorite type of game to hunt?

My favorite game to hunt changes as I grow and have new experiences, but thus far, I still find the Northern Ontario Moose hunt to be a favorite. It allows me to reflect on my family and upbringing, and hunt in the same way my grandfather did. It’s a special connection to my roots and a tradition that holds a lot of meaning for me.

What challenges do you face when hunting?

There are various challenges that come with hunting for myself including physical, and mental. As I get older, weather tends to play into my hunts with extreme conditions and cold gets to my bones so I find that wearing the proper equipment for me and my needs gets me through my days. I have a condition called Graves Disease which I argue with every day, but it still wins and one of the intolerances are to cold. Sometimes the terrain gives me a challenge since I broke my talus bone in my foot in 2021 but I overcome it by keep on trekking making sure the footwear I have is going to support my needs.

Armasight Sidekick Review: An In-Depth Look

We have been lucky enough to do some extensive testing with the Armasight Sidekick over the last couple of weeks. We have tested this in both an urban situation as well as out at the farm while chasing coyotes and raccoons. While the critters got away from us, the impression of the Armasight Sidekick 320 was not lost on us.

Introduction to the Armasight Sidekick

The Sidekick 320 is the smallest fully multi-functional 12-micron 320 thermal imaging monocular on the market. At a price point of under $2300, this unit is worth taking a look at. The Sidekick 320 boasts a 60Hz frame rate; you can clearly see the advantages of this looking through the unit. We have even taken this with us on our nightly dog walks, and I can clearly see Miko when we throw the ball in the field. We have a glow in the dark ball we can throw about a hundred yards. I toss this ball out and send Miko way out and back, and I can watch her through the unit the entire time. She is a black dog, so at night I cannot see her; I lose her without the unit. The unit weighs 210 grams, so it is incredibly light. You can use it as both a handheld unit or you can mount it with the built-in mini-rail for hands-free operation mounted to a helmet. OLED display provides a crisp image, and the button controls are easy to control the unit. It takes some time to learn how it all works, so give it some time. When you get in the field, the time you spent learning will pay off exponentially.

Compact Design

The beauty of this unit is its small size and light weight. It is easy to use, and the buttons line up to your fingers easily for manipulation. The eye-cup blocks out light. The entire unit fits easily in the pocket of your hoodie, so it is easy to carry with you. The unit weighs 210 grams, so it is convenient to have with you anytime you are out after dark. Sitting in the feed lot and seeing a coyote or a coon with this unit is so incredibly cool. Of course, watching Miko walk around with this unit in the dark is just eye-popping.

Hands-Free Functionality: The Benefits of Helmet Mount Usage

Seeing in the dark is already one of the coolest things you can do. It gives you this feeling of confidence you have never really had in the outdoors at night without technology like this. Mounting the Sidekick 320 to a helmet with the Rayvn Group Modular Bridge Mount is simply epic. You can walk around with this unit mounted on to a helmet and see everything. It is easy to flip up and get it out of your way. It takes a little effort to figure out how to mount it and get it set, but once you do it, it is super cool. Once I had it mounted, I took a two-mile walk just exploring with the unit. One of the features that I like about this unit is that it has a very large field of view and it allows me to see far and wide without clouding my vision. I can see everything for about a hundred yards or so very clearly, and I can see animals like coyotes, rabbits and coons as well as my dog easily. It is incredibly easy to get closer to animals at night without spooking them by keeping still and making very slow movements.

Video and Image Capture

The Sidekick 320 allows image capturing and video recording which can be pretty handy. It takes a little bit of learning how to navigate through to the image and video capture, but once you learn it, it is pretty easy to utilize in the field. The video is clear, as are the images. The opportunity to share what you see at night in a unit this reasonable is an absolute game changer. It is awesome fun to come back from a walk having seen foxes, coons, cats and such in my neighborhood. also pretty cool to sit on a park bench and watch people interact. In a hunting situation, it’s always good to have this kind of back-up video capture. In a tactical or dangerous situation, it might be life saving.

On Monday, May 6, Chef Danny Hieronymus of Hieronymus Provisions and author of the cookbook “Hookin’ and Cookin’ – Southern Coastal Cuisine” will host/sponsor a wild game cooking demo. Chef Danny will walk through a simple, yet elevated recipe you can use to impress your friends and family during your next hunting camp. Chef Danny will also be on-site, preparing all of the meals during the Annual Meeting.

On Tuesday, May 7, there are four Content Creation Sessions. There will be time allotted to attend all of the presentations during these sessions.

Medic Up Consulting: Explore vital first aid techniques within the context of hunting, fishing and outdoor sports. Specifically, the application of tourniquets, the process of wound packing and the use of chest seals. These critical skills are essential for emergency response scenarios often encountered in outdoor activities and will be thoroughly discussed to equip participants with life-saving knowledge.

Five Reasons to Get Outside on Trails This Spring

On Celebrate Trails Day, Rails to Trails Conservancy calls on America to walk, bike and be active outside to showcase the joy and impact of trails

WASHINGTON, DC—Rails to Trails Conservancy, the nation’s largest trail, walking and biking advocacy organization, is calling on people across the country to get outside on trails this spring to celebrate the many ways that trails and connected trail networks bring joy and impact to people’s lives. Central to the organization’s call to action is Celebrate Trails Day, hosted on April 27, 2024, with hundreds of events nationwide that serve to inspire more people to make trails, walking and biking part of their everyday lives.

“There is unmatched potential in trail networks to make walking and biking part of our everyday lives, unlocking all of the good that happens when we are active outside, in the places where we live,” said Brandi Horton, RTC’s vice president of communications. “That’s why RTC is uniting everyone in a common appreciation for trails—and the impact of connecting trails in our communities. Our time on the trail is so much more than a day outside.”

Here are five reasons to get outside on trails this spring, and on Celebrate Trails Day, says RTC:

It’s one of the best seasons for outside adventures with milder weather across the country—perfect for time on the trail. People can find their perfect trail using RTC’s free trail-finder app, TrailLink. It’s good for our bodies and the planet. Having spaces to walk and bike near where you live makes it more likely that you will be physically active, which is important for our bodies and our minds. And, when we swap out short car trips for walking and biking trips, we burn calories instead of carbon! It can be a safe way to get around without a car. Currently, people who walk and bike are increasingly likely to be seriously injured or killed in crashes with cars and trucks. Connected trail networks separate people from vehicles, making it a safer transportation option for more people. It’s the right time to let elected officials know that trails matter to you. On Celebrate Trails Day and every day, our time on the trail is an act of advocacy sending a message that trails are important to people across the country. As Congress and local officials make decisions about ways to invest infrastructure resources, getting outside on the trail is an important way to build support. There are more places to walk, bike and be active outside than ever! With more than 41,000 miles of multiuse trails—where you can walk, run, ride, skate and more—and over 150 trail networks emerging, there are safe places to walk, bike and be active outside in every single state and hundreds of communities across the country.

To find creative ideas for getting outsidephoto and video content for use with credit to RTC, reporters are encouraged to visit RTC’s Celebrate Trails Day website and follow #CelebrateTrails on social media.

The WMI North American Conference is one of the largest gatherings of staff from fish and wildlife agencies and conservation groups in the United States.
