Judging Deer Points

Judging deer points involves evaluating the size, length, and symmetry of the antlers. Here are the steps to judge deer points:

  1. Count the number of points: This is the easiest way to judge deer points. Simply count the number of tines (points) on each antler.
  2. Look for length: The length of the main beams and tines are important factors in judging deer points. Longer tines and beams are generally indicative of a larger deer.
  3. Assess symmetry: Symmetry is an important factor in judging deer points. The antlers should be symmetrical from side to side, with similar tine length and placement on each side.
  4. Check for mass: The mass or thickness of the antlers is another important factor to consider. The antlers should be thick and heavy, particularly at the base.
  5. Consider abnormal points: Some deer may have abnormal points, such as drop tines or stickers. These points can add to the total point count but are usually not considered in determining the overall quality of the antlers.
  6. Use a scoring system: If you want a more precise measurement of deer points, you can use a scoring system such as the Boone and Crockett or Pope and Young scoring systems. These systems take into account the length, width, and circumference of the antlers to calculate a final score.

It's important to note that while antler size and points can be used to judge the quality of a deer, they are not the only factors to consider. Factors such as age, body size, and overall health of the deer should also be taken into account when determining the quality of a deer.
